What is denim: fabric and style

I wonder if the first “carriers” of jeans were surprised if they were told that such clothes would move from working to fashionable! But it really is! Each new fashion trend is necessarily embodied in products from jeans. Such clothes are universal: they are worn at any time of the year, they are combined with all colors and simply comfortable. Now it is difficult to meet a person who does not have at least one denim in his wardrobe. Why? Let's try to figure it out!

Denim and jeans are close relatives

It would seem that it makes no difference what is the name of the fabric from which your favorite pants are sewn. But so far, some have argued that denim and jeans are not synonyms. This is not true.

Reference. At the turn of the 13-14 centuries in the French city of Nimes made fabric "twill from Nimes" - serge de Nimes.

If you pronounce the name "in Russian", you get "de nim". In almost the same way we call the material today, we only write in one word. Sails were sewn from this fabric, it was so durable!

2 centuries passed, and the Italian sailors from Genoa, wearing canvas trousers, called them "jeans." This is an Americanized version of the name of their hometown.

Important! The words “denim” and “jeans” are synonyms or different names for the same fabric. It was this canvas that was destined to become one of America's greatest assets and conquer the whole world.

The originality of the fabric

When we say “jeans”, first of all, we mean pants. However, not only pants or shorts are sewn from such a fabric. It is also used for skirts, jackets, bags, shoes and even home textiles.

Why has this material not lost its appeal? It is safe to say that strength has become one of its main strengths. And we are talking not only about the resistance of the fibers, but also about the dyes used.

Kinds

All of the above became possible to produce after the initial fabrication technology was modernized. First, a diagonal weave twill was produced, the same serge de Nimes.

Reference. It is this kind of fabric among professionals that has the name "denim". It is the most expensive, coarse, it becomes a little softer after washing.

There are other types of denim .

  • Broken twill . The threads are intertwined with a “herringbone”, the fabric is stiff, and it is difficult to fit along the figure. Therefore, it goes on tailoring free-cut products: jackets, jackets, straight trousers.

  • Chambray . Lightweight, summer variety, not suitable only for sewing skinny and jeans.

  • Jin . Budget material, as high-quality cotton is blended with cheaper cotton. Therefore, products are not worn for long.

  • Stretch Canvas with the addition of elastane or lycra, easy to stretch. From it narrow things are sewn, emphasizing the bends of the body.

  • Rami or natural stretch . 45–55% consists of cotton, the rest is Chinese nettle.

  • Ecru . The name translates as "unprocessed." That is, it is a denim of a natural, unbleached color. Depending on the feedstock, it has the color of linen or silk.

Color

The method of dyeing unites all types of jeans: only one thread is dyed, the main one . The transverse thread remains light, so the wrong side always turns lighter.

Many are sure that the jeans should be blue. Indeed, the most common dye for this fabric to this day remains indigo . It was this dye that was the most persistent at the moment when L. Strauss began selling pants from English canvas to gold prospectors.

But today you can find denim of not only classic blue, but almost any color.

Important! A special kind of fabric is printed jeans. It has not lost its relevance for several years, it looks especially good in a summer wardrobe.

Care

Today jeans say different things about washing. Some people think that frequent washing destroys the fibers of the fabric, in addition, the color with each wash a little "washed off." Others are sure that this does not harm the material.

Important! Denim products are washed with detergent without a whitening effect and in strict accordance with the instructions on the label. It is preferable to wash by hand, in the presence of persistent dirt - pre-soak.

As for leaving, there are a few more rules .

  • Washing should be carried out separately from other things in order to exclude their staining.
  • Dry flattened, without prior push-ups.
  • Ironing from the front is acceptable, but only through the fabric. Otherwise, an unnecessary gloss may appear.

Fashionable style

Denim is called not only material, but also a special style in clothing. More precisely, this style conveys the phrase " total jeans ." The word “total” is the main characteristic of the style that stands out from the well-known casual.

Choosing this trendy destination, denim fans triumph. You can wear all jeans! Denim products are suitable for both work and leisure. And decorated with sequins or embroidery, they are quite appropriate at a festive party.

Total jeans attracts with its affordability. You can find clothes on any wallet and look as stylish in inexpensive things as in those for which you have to pay significantly more. Expensive jeans products include clothing sewn in the United States. But things from Japan are even more expensive.

Reference. Japanese denim is pleasant to the touch. Its high cost is due to technological difficulties. Old weaving machines are used for weaving, that is, it is handmade.

It was once believed that items of the same color should be assembled in a kit. Today this rule does not apply! You can wear clothes of different colors and shades at the same time .

Recently, it is not forbidden to combine blue trousers, a gray shirt with a print, a mustard jacket. There is one justification - it is very different, but still denim!
