Why can pearls and other jewelry be stored only in the dark?

The proper storage of pearls and other jewelry is a guarantee that they will last you a long time and will delight you with their elegance and beauty. They are capricious and do not tolerate sunlight and high humidity.

It is worthwhile to understand why this is happening, and how to properly store your jewelry.

What jewelry should be stored in the dark?

Important! Even high-quality jewelry is recommended to be stored in the dark, not to mention the more expensive metals. This simple tip will preserve the beauty of products.

These materials require a dark place:

Gold and platinum. The place should be not only dark, but also dry. It is best to dwell on the choice of special boxes that are covered with soft material inside. Cardboard boxes are contraindicated, since they contain a large percentage of sulfur, which may cause dark spots on gold.

Silver This metal is not so finicky, but it should still be stored in the dark. In this case, it is better to choose not a box, but a bag made of polyethylene. Professionals recommend placing an activated carbon tablet there so that it absorbs excess moisture.

Pearls. Such products especially need a dark and dry place. A prerequisite is the absence of direct sunlight, contact with chemicals. Clean pearl jewelry only with special napkins, otherwise you can destroy the layer of nacre.

Important! Store precious stones exclusively in a dark place and clean several times a year with special tools.

Why?

Pearls and other jewelry can become unusable if stored improperly. It is worth considering the main reasons:

  1. Bright light. It is especially dangerous in tandem with high temperature. Organic substances, which are part of the jewelry, quickly dry out under the influence of direct sunlight, the surface may crack over time. It is recommended to set aside jewelry (especially pearls) in hot weather. The best solution is to wear gems in the evening, as the sun does not shine so brightly.
  2. Light and low temperature. This leads to another problem: surface fading. Therefore, do not wear the jewel in severe frost. It is appropriate to wear jewelry only in a warm room.
  3. Polluted air. Ecology is getting worse every year, particles of soot and tobacco smoke invariably settle on the surface. If there is constant contact with dirt, and even with a bright color, then the color becomes very dull. In relation to pearls, a yellowish tint appears.
  4. Chemicals Bright light is not the main enemy of pearls and other jewelry. Even if you wear it exclusively in the evening, then protect it from unnecessary exposure to perfume or cosmetics. If the jewelry is not removed, then small cracks or spots will appear on them. It is recommended that you first spray the perfume, wait 10-15 minutes, and then put on your favorite jewelry.
  5. Inattention. Even a lack of attention to jewelry can harm pearls and other jewelry. They begin to age and fade. The best solution is to wear the jewelry regularly and lower it as often as possible for half an hour in slightly salted water. Do not forget to wipe the jewelry dry after such “sea bathing”.
