What is a satchel?

The school satchel remains an indispensable companion for every elementary school student. Both parents and grandparents of modern children went with him to study, and he is unlikely to ever go out of fashion.

What is a satchel?

In everyday life with reference to school bags, the word “portfolio” is more often used, but this is not entirely correct. The portfolio is carried in the hand, since it does not have straps, the satchel is equipped with them.

Meaning of the word

However, one of the definitions of a knapsack describes it as a briefcase with straps. This design was borrowed from pre-revolutionary times from army uniforms - it turned out to be convenient to carry not only the soldier’s personal equipment in a shoulder bag, but also a whole arsenal of school supplies.

In Tsarist Russia, knapsacks were made in the manner of soldiers - from black leather with a lid trimmed with seal fur. After the war, father's field bags were in use. Instead of the straps there was a belt, however, allowing you to place the bag behind your back. And in the case of a boy’s fight - use as a very heavy weapon!

Design Features

The accessory is a kind of box with straps and differs:

  • the rigidity of the case, so notebooks and textbooks are not remembered, and the back will be protected from cutting corners;
  • wide and hard bottom, excluding sagging;
  • wide straps and a hard back, in recent years, as a rule - orthopedic;
  • a small and intentionally uncomfortable to wear handle, so that there is no temptation to neglect the straps;
  • one or two compartments and many pockets and pockets - convenient for folding educational supplies and uniform load.

Important! When sending a favorite child to school, parents need to make sure that they are not too lazy to put their hands in both straps, and not carry heaviness on one shoulder. Otherwise, scoliosis cannot be avoided!

This bag is ideal for the younger student . It would be reasonable to buy a satchel for children of middle and senior school age, but this does not fit well with the teenage dress code.

What is the difference from a backpack?

Evolved from a shoulder bag with straps, the backpack retained the softness of the walls, and this is its main difference from the knapsack. The form does not matter, with the ability to distribute the load on the back, the situation is similar. Soft items for study can crumple, hard ones can cause serious discomfort to the back.

But in appearance it is much prettier than a satchel, besides - much easier. He will have to buy it when the child ceases to agree to the bag "like a first-grader." By this time (usually by younger adolescents), a stronger back will be able to withstand wearing things in a backpack.

Tip: In the search for a balance between appearance and benefit, manufacturers came up with the idea of producing hybrid bags: a product similar to its soft walls on a backpack is equipped with an orthopedic back, a hard bottom and wide straps. Ideal for middle school student and even high school student!

Schoolbag selection criteria

Going to the school goods store is better with the future owner of the bag - it is he who will have to carry this thing on himself. It is only important to ensure that the appearance is not the main reason for choosing! Primary requirements:

  • compliance with the norms of weight;
  • the presence of orthopedic elements;
  • equipping with reflective strips;
  • quality of material and workmanship.

By all modern standards, the mass of the weights carried by the student’s back should not exceed a tenth of his own . This means that in the first and second grades the portfolio with all its contents should not weigh more than 2.1 kg, in the second and third grades -2.6 kg, and in the fifth and sixth grades - 3.5 kg. Subtracting the mass of the set of training supplies, we get the optimal number of satchel mass - 0.7-1 kg.

Important! The requirements apply only to subjects for study! Parents should make sure that extra “passengers” do not get into school baggage: toys, game tablets, non-program books, etc.

Orthopedists and sports doctors insist on the presence in the knapsack design of orthopedic inserts, lumbar support (the roller at the bottom of the product), special soft and "breathing" pads on the back and straps (about five centimeters wide, equipped with buckles-adjusters). The satchel is selected correctly if it fits snugly on the back of the child, without supporting the lower back and the back of the head .

Reflectors should be on the front, straps and ends.

The knapsack, like its owner, has a difficult life, and this dictates special requirements for its materials. The fabric should be lightweight, durable, easy to wash, without losing appearance. Ideally, if the product can be washed with soap and a brush. The bottom fabric should be waterproof - how many puddles will be dropped?

Pay attention to the seams - durability reliable processing with edgings is required, otherwise you can cut yourself about them . The plastic used in the construction should be perfectly smooth.

Necessarily high quality locks and zippers!

Important! The child will walk in different seasonal clothes, and, trying on a satchel on a shirt or t-shirt, you need to count taking into account the thickness of the jacket, coat, down jacket, etc.

How to choose a first-grader satchel?

The smallest student needs the lightest bag - ideally no more than 600 gr. Particular attention should be paid to the back - it should repeat the curves of the spine . A sign of compliance with this requirement - pads in the form of the letter "X".

Do not be tempted to buy a thing for growth - the baby’s back will suffer. The satchel, in principle, should not be too large - in width not wider than the shoulders. In addition, in the first class, not many educational supplies are required, and in a space that is too spacious for them, they will rattle.

And, of course, the first owner should like the little owner!
