What is a burqa

In previous years, a woman wore only 2-3 burqas during her life. This moment is extremely indicative. Thanks to him, it becomes clear how today the rights and powers of eastern girls have expanded. Today they can be on the street much more often and longer.

Burqa: what is it

On the one hand, this is a common word, collective meaning for clothes that completely cover a woman. A token is used when they want to indicate a possessive attitude towards a girl. In the traditional sense, this is a cape, eastern outerwear. It is not worn on the head, but on a skullcap or lower scarf.

What does the burqa look like?

This is a wide bathrobe that covers absolutely the whole body. There are no slots even for hands, and sleeves are not provided for this outfit either either (some models have blended sleeves wound behind the back and tied there with ribbons).

Reference!

A false sleeve is called a tuck.

The face area is draped tightly. The woman in this outfit sees the world through a fine-mesh insert in the eye area - chachwan. The size of such an element is small. Lateral vision in it just will not work.

There is necessarily a lining . In the traditional cut model, the lining at the bottom goes into colorful sub-floors. For newly born women, special “variations” of the cape are provided. In their case, the dressing gown has devices that facilitate the process of breastfeeding. The difference is seen primarily in the structure of the collar zone.

What is the burqa for?

In some countries, the appearance of a woman on the streets without traditional clothing is tantamount to a suicidal impulse. However, we are not talking about a burqa. Even in those parts of the world today - today, earlier morals were stricter - it can be replaced with a slightly more open and less multi-layered cloak or shawl. At least for a hijab. Only one exception to this rule is known: a special category of hermits. They must wear this item, no other.

In other cases, the question of the appropriateness of referring to this particular cloak is under discussion. In eastern families, in which the traditional way of life is still preserved, the decision is made by the head of the whole house or its female half. People with less conservative views provide daughters, sisters and mothers with the opportunity to independently determine what exactly they should cover their heads on the street.

Important!

In many European countries, wearing a burqa in public places is a crime. For such misconduct, a fine of several hundred euros is imposed. In other states, you can’t appear in traditional oriental clothing in educational institutions: schools, kindergartens, universities. These bans appeared in the wake of growing Islamophobia.

The appearance of the burqa: a historical excursion

The exact date of appearance is impossible to name. According to some sources, oriental treatises from the 9th century mention farajas (another name for burqas), embroidered with precious stones. Others say that the dress was invented by the ancient Egyptians. It is only known that the Tajik writer of the XV – XVI centuries mentioned this variety of oriental dressing gown in his writings. Zaynnadin Mahmoud Wasifi. He claimed that this clothing was not only female, but also male.

Who has the right to wear a burqa

According to ancient traditions, the first farajas are sewn for the 9th anniversary of the girl. However, modern families often prefer to wait for puberty and only after that dress the newly-born girl in a dressing gown.

At the same time, wearing a burqa just like that, having no cultural or religious right, is not worth it . This wardrobe item is narrowly oriented. It is permissible only for eastern women, as well as for those who renounced their religion and converted to Islam.

Can the burqa be used only as an accessory

Given the Islamophobic mood of the public, you should not wear this item of clothing for no good reason. Moreover, such a gesture can be regarded as an insult to deeply religious people.

What fabrics are used for burqa

Silk, brocade, satin is an ideal option if you need a color or festive burqa. Also, the cape is sewn from fabric Benares, Pari Pasha and velvet. Chachwan is made of black horsehair. If necessary, it is painted (usually it goes to match the cloak itself, but there are exceptions).

Possible colors and decoration of the burqa

It is not customary to wear jewelry on top of a burqa (exception: a brooch worn under the throat to fix and beautifully drape the fabric). Some women may dare to look at the unusual shape of the mesh, the shiny stripes and tassels on the false sleeves, thrown back, but nothing more. Hijab, on the contrary, allows such tricks. For example, you can put the jewelry on your head and pick up a discreet classic bag.

Important!

Look for jewelry on your head in specialized Muslim stores. Various handkerchiefs, hats for them, invisibles, elastic bands for increasing the volume of hair and other useful things used both on a weekday and for a wedding are usually sold there.

Embroidery is allowed as a decorative element of the burqa. The most popular patterns:

  • black pepper;
  • snake footprint;
  • curl;
  • jug.

Most often, the ornament is let through the hem, collar zone, decorative pockets (they used to be of practical use, they were used as horse pockets during horse walks) and false sleeves.

In terms of color, there are no restrictions. They disappeared at the end of the 19th century. Since then, green, lilac, silver, and purple women’s dressing gowns have been appropriate.
