Turtleneck dress: pattern and tailoring

In the season when warm days give way to cool, it's time to sew yourself a cozy and feminine dress. Turtleneck dress is very suitable for the autumn wardrobe of a modern city dweller. It is very simple for him to build a pattern and with tailoring you can keep within a few hours.

Turtleneck dress: how to make a pattern and sew it yourself

The main characteristic of a knitted fabric for sewing is extensibility. The easier the knitwear lasts, the smaller the increase is laid in the pattern.

For such a product you do not have to build a complex pattern. Tucks and complex reliefs that will only decorate any dress from inextensible fabric are not suitable for knitwear.

Reference! The exception is female figures with large breasts: for them, a small breast tuck is preserved.

A knitted dress pattern may seem very simple. It’s not a pity to spend time working it out. One basic knitted base is suitable for several types of women's clothing:

  • on such a pattern a turtleneck can be sewn if it differs from a similar dress only in length;
  • various knitted blouses;
  • shortening the sleeve, and slightly changing the neck, you can use the pattern for the shirt.

It makes sense to replenish the collection of your favorite patterns, a proven basis for knitwear.

One of the most grateful models: with a minimum of investment and effort, it is easy to get a hit of the season.

Materials and Tools

The main material for sewing this product is knitwear. Knitted fabric varies in density, knit pattern and fiber composition.

It is recommended to choose a dense, well-stretched knitwear with an extensibility of 40-50%.

A separate line of special machines has been installed at sewing factories for sewing knitwear. At home, you can do with the usual equipment. It is enough to loosen the thread tension in the sewing machine, and to thread both needles in the overlock, setting it to the four-thread seam mode.

There will be no problems with sewing when the house has a good, preferably four-thread, overlock. If there is no such special machine, you can sew the seams with a knitted stitch (available on any modern typewriter), and seam on a three-thread overlock. If there is no overlock at all, as well as the knitted stitch itself, you can sew the seams with the zigzag stitch with a small stitch on a regular sewing machine.

Some types of knitted fabric are damaged by a regular needle, for them you need to change the needle to a special needle for knitwear with a rounded tip. She pushes the threads apart without damaging them.

Pattern

To build a pattern of a knitted turtleneck dress, there are several ways:

  1. You can build a pattern using a simple algorithm, with a minimum number of necessary measures.
  2. The method is to obtain a knitted pattern from the base for inextensible materials by modeling. This method will require some experience in constructing patterns.
  3. The easiest way, but suitable for such a simple thing, is to circle the details of your favorite knitted dress or knitted sweater, and build a sleeve and collar yourself:

To build a golf collar pattern, you need to draw a rectangle, where length is the length of the neck, and width is twice the desired height of the collar.

Cut

Often, on one of the sides, the knitted fabric launches “arrows”. When cutting, the parts should be positioned so that the neck and the sleeves of the sleeve are on the open side. If you expand the material, on the contrary, the flat loops “decorate” the bottom of the product. And the neck and eye are so reliably stitched that the flat loops are not terrible here.

Cutting a knitted fabric is otherwise the same as cutting a fabric.

Advice! In order that the tensile material does not move during cutting, the patterns can be chipped with both layers of material.

Sewing Stages

Sewing is quite simple, fits into a short list of steps.

For the basic steps of tailoring a dress, an overlock and a household sewing machine are enough:

  • Sewed back and shelf are sewn on the overlock along the shoulder and side seams.
  • On the sleeves and collar we grind the inner seam.
  • The collar is sewn into the neck, and the sleeves are in the armholes.
  • We install a double needle on the sewing machine and sew the bottom of the dress and sleeves.

Reference! Pins can be used to fasten knitwear; the main thing is to remember to remove them in front of the overlock and machine paw.

The last stage, but also important, is the ironing of the finished dress:

  • We use steam and a terry towel backing so that there is no trace of the iron on the knitwear.
  • The dress after ironing with steam should cool well when unfolded.

The finished turtleneck dress will serve as the basic thing in the wardrobe, it fits well with different tops and shoes. After the first one, you will probably want to sew a couple more.
