How to sew on rhinestones?

There are many ways to transform a thing. One of them is decorating with rhinestones. Small, but bright and often shiny crystals form an iridescent volumetric pattern on the subject. You can create such an application yourself. To do this, you will need a wardrobe item, knowledge of the characteristics of its material, a scattering of decorative stones and patience.

How to attach rhinestones to clothes?

The gluing method depends on the characteristics of the fabric from which the clothes are sewn, as well as on the type of rhinestone. There are crystals on which a layer of hot-melt adhesive has already been applied. Such jewelry is attached to the item using spot heating.

In turn, the pebble can be heated with an iron or applicator . The choice between these 2 options is carried out after taking into account the features of the decorated things. If the fabric from which it is made tolerates ironing, then gluing can be carried out using an iron. If ironing is prohibited, then work on fixing the rhinestone is performed using the applicator.

In addition to thermal performance, manual gluing is practiced. It reduces to applying glue to the back of the crystal. Sometimes an adhesive agent is used on the clothes themselves.

Important! Regardless of how rhinestones were attached, clothes should be washed with them at a water temperature of no higher than 50 degrees.

On glue

The method is suitable for rhinestones, the reverse side of which is not covered with a bonding composition . Similar products come with the “no hotfix” marking. It is also called cold fix rhinestone.

The work should begin with the correct choice of glue . Before buying, be sure to study the composition. It should not contain acrylate dispersions, acetone and acetic acids. These components discolor fabrics and decorations for them, and at the same time do not provide reliable fixation of the decorative element and matter.

Next, start preparing clothes . It must be washed and degreased. With the last task, folk remedies or specialized rinses will cope. When choosing them, pay attention to the description of additional functions. If there is an antistatic effect, look for another product. In preparation for gluing the rhinestone, you do not need to remove the electric charge from the wardrobe.

If the thing is better not to wash and not to wet it strongly, then the way out will be its treatment with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol. Close attention should be paid to the area that you are going to decorate. Further work with the subject of the wardrobe depends on what part will be decorated and from what material it will be created . If the material does not stretch, and the cut element does not come into contact with other parts of the thing, then it makes sense to fix the decorated area in the hoop. They will help to adhere the crystals more accurately, reliably and evenly.

Important! The hoop operates on the principle of stretching. Do not apply them on fabrics that stretch well.

If the decorated area is in contact with others, for example: the front side is in contact with the back, then you need to put a piece of cardboard under it (preferably thicker). Thus, you protect the adjacent parts of the clothing from impregnation with glue.

The sequence of steps during the direct attachment of jewelry to the subject of the wardrobe:

  • to lay on the working surface a material that does not respond to glue (necessary so that the thing does not stick to the table);
  • transfer the pattern to the fabric;
  • using a tool (someone uses tweezers, others a slightly melted thin candle, for example, a church candle), pick up a rhinestone;
  • apply a little glue on it (on the back, non-facial part);
  • put the decor in place (the side with glue should be facing the surface of the thing, and the front should look at you);
  • press a little;
  • Repeat for the remaining jewelry.

Glue can be applied directly to the wardrobe itself, however, having no idea about the process, it is difficult to determine the required amount of funds. Errors are fraught with uneven and unreliable gluing, as well as the formation of whitish masses around the rhinestone - this is what the glue looks like after hardening.

Thermo

Suitable for rhinestones, the non-front side of which was coated with adhesive by the manufacturer . The adhesive layer is hot-melt. When exposed to iron, it softens and gains fastening properties.

Step-by-step instructions for the use of such crystals:

  • transfer the pattern to the fabric;
  • put foil, paper or a specialized mat under the fabric (this is protection against glue getting on other areas of the wardrobe item);
  • lay out the picture with pebbles;
  • set on the iron the "two points", "silk", "wool" mode (steam, disable humidification);
  • cover the material with rhinestones with iron;
  • put the iron on the area with rhinestones, press gently, hold for 2–3 minutes (the larger the jewelry, the more time you should use the iron);
  • remove the iron and iron;
  • let the clothes cool.

Important! The thermostrases with the iron are well attached to smooth fabrics, but not to fleecy and not prone to stretching.

Using applicator

The device, like the iron, is suitable for working with hot-meshed rhinestones, but it handles jewelry and fabric much more delicately. Due to the gentle effect, the applicator can be used on materials sensitive to heat and high temperatures. They also resort to it in the process of decorating relief, stretchable and fleecy canvases. In their case, the device provides the most reliable mount.

The device itself looks like a miniature soldering iron, on the head of which there is a miniature heating element. Its circumference corresponds to the circle of rhinestones. Due to this, only the pebble is heated, and the fabric is not exposed to high temperatures.

Important! The heating element comes in a removable type, and the applicator is also sold with a set of nozzles of different diameters. When changing them, there is the possibility of high-quality gluing of rhinestones of various sizes.

Bonding process itself:

  1. the pattern is transferred from the picture to the fabric;
  2. according to the pattern, rhinestones are placed;
  3. the applicator is connected to the network;
  4. the device is given a little time to warm up;
  5. the applicator is brought to a rhinestone placed in its place;
  6. press the device;
  7. wait for the set time (the timing depends on the size of the decoration), clean;
  8. repeat the manipulation with other decorative elements.

On scotch tape

This is not about stationery, but about a special adhesive tape-film, which can be found in the store of accessories and fabrics. For its intended use, you will need:

  • tweezers;
  • Scotch tape (more correct name: thermal film);
  • pattern template in mirror image (can be displayed in Point);
  • rhinestones.

The process itself:

  1. a stencil with a pattern is firmly fixed to a flat work surface (for example, using stationery tape);
  2. remove the substrate from the thermal film (the substrate can not be torn or discarded, it will come in handy in the future);
  3. we put the film on the drawing so that its adhesive side is facing up, and not sticky in contact with the drawing;
  4. fasten the edges of the thermal film with tape to the table;
  5. we pick up the rhinestones with tweezers (we take the crystal not as usual, but with the back side, that is, the tweezers should touch the part on which the glue is applied);
  6. place the stone (the adhesive side should be facing up, and the front side should be in contact with the thermal film);
  7. at the end of laying out the picture, take the substrate, which was previously removed from the thermal film, and put on top of the rhinestone;
  8. press (act evenly over the entire area of the picture);
  9. we remove all layers of adhesive tape, which fixed the work to the table;
  10. turn over the workpiece;
  11. we check whether it turned out correctly;
  12. if there are errors, then carefully remove the substrate and make the necessary adjustments;
  13. if everything is in order, then you can proceed to transfer the pattern from the thermal film to clothes;
  14. we lay out the wardrobe item on the ironing board;
  15. remove the substrate from the adhesive tape;
  16. on top of the clothes we put a film with rhinestones (the side with rhinestones should be in contact with the clothes);
  17. lay out an even sheet of paper on top of the film;
  18. we take the iron, set the “wool” mode, turn off the steam;
  19. put the iron on top of the applique, wait (5-15 seconds for thin tissue, up to 30 seconds for dense matter);
  20. stop exposure to the iron and let cool;
  21. after complete cooling, remove the adhesive tape.

Important! If the pattern is laid out with rhinestones of different heights and widths, then before transferring the pattern from the film to the clothes, you need to put a soft cloth under the wardrobe item. It will squeeze unevenly under the weight of the iron, due to which the finished application will turn out to be as embossed and voluminous, as planned.

Sew one at a time

Sewing is possible only if the rhinestones themselves have holes for passing the thread. In this case, not ordinary threads are used, but specialized monofilament (you can buy it at the hardware store) or the thinnest fishing line (suitable for those sold in sewing departments, as well as products sold through fishing stores). A needle also needs a special one - the so-called needle for beads.

The sewing process itself is simple. The only thing to consider is that passing a thread through a hole in a crystal is not enough . It is necessary to pass monofilament twice through a hole of rhinestones. In other words, each crystal is attached with a double stitch.

Serious problems usually arise at the end of the embroidery process. Craftswomen simply do not know how to fix the fishing line so that it does not dissolve in the future and does not prick while wearing. Matches (not a lighter) will help to cope with the task . It is necessary to tie the ends of the monofilament knot, and then warm from the flame (not the fire itself, but its heat) to scorch the ends.

Important! Do not choose rhinestones with sharp edges. They "cut" the line on which they are strung.

How to attach ribbon rhinestones

For work, we need the following tools and materials:

  • strass ribbon;
  • scissors;
  • pliers (small);
  • needle;
  • monofilament or silver lurex;
  • acrylic paint;
  • brush.

First you need to determine the end and beginning of the ribbon with rhinestones . They differ in the tongue. At the front of it there is, at the end it is not. Having found out where the beginning of the bunch of crystals, we apply the tape to the sewn place and begin to work with the needle.

We stick the needle to the left of the first rhinestone (that is, on the side from which the ligament continues, but does not break). The needle is from bottom to top, we perform a double stitch. Next, the needle lead to the tongue. As before, sew it with a double stitch.

Important! The seams should be located as close as possible to the rhinestones. After completing the stitch, the crystal adjacent to it is moved closer to the previous decoration. Due to this, the tape disappears from view, only decorative pebbles remain in sight.

In a similar way - double stitch, thread the needle from below, and output from above - the whole bunch of strass is sewn . At the end of the pattern, the excess length of the tape is bitten off with pliers. Further actions depend on the type of drawing. If the ornament is circular, then the rivets holding the last stone in a row are sewn to the tongue (a thread is threaded through the rivets, and then it is sewn on top of the tongue). If the pattern is not circular, then the monofilament passed through the extreme rivets is fixed with a knot on the back of the thing .

Paint is necessary to create a background on which stitches will not be visible. In other words, you need a paint that completely matches the monofilament in tone. She is dyed with fabric under rhinestones. To accurately perform the action, the attached tape is slightly bent to the side or the fingers are removed by the matter.

Ways to sew rhinestones on a knitted fabric

Reliable fastening to an uneven surface, for example, to a knitted hat, gives a "soldering iron", it is also an applicator . During its use, other parts of the knitted product are not exposed to high temperature, due to which their structure does not deteriorate. If there is no specialized tool at hand, then the best way out will be the use of sewn crystals.
