How to sew leather gloves?

Gloves are universal, depending on the material, they can become an addition to a coat, tracksuit or evening dress. Gloves are made of various materials - from lace to thick leather, but in any design should be comfortable. These leather products are worn by men and women, creating from them an elegant element to a stylish look.

Which skin is suitable for gloves?

There is even the special term “glove skin”. It is elastic, strong and thin, but excellent in shape. As a rule, glove leather receives these properties in the process of special dressing, which differs from that for belts, bags, shoes.

The main types:

  • The skin of a lamb. Soft, highly elastic. Used when sewing expensive products.
  • Goat skin . Often found, thicker and rougher than the previous type, but an order of magnitude cheaper.
  • Deer skin. Thick but soft look of the material, interesting pattern, warm skin.
  • Pig skin . Cheap but rude enough. Used for sewing winter gloves with fur.
  • Suede . Moody material, thin and velvety. It is made from various types of leathers. Luxurious evening gloves are sewn from the thinnest suede.

Instruments

If your sewing machine can sew leather, then the gloves will be indistinguishable from those of factory production. Most older machines can stitch glove skin. It is advisable to purchase a special teflon foot for the skin, as well as a trihedral sewing needle.

We will need:

  • sharp knife;
  • wheel with needles for marking holes;
  • thin awl;
  • glue;
  • sewing needle;
  • threads in tone or contrast;
  • ruler.

Important! All the holes made on the skin remain, therefore, it is not swept away and is not fixed with pins if absolutely necessary.

How to sew leather gloves with your own hands?

Patterns for male and female gloves are similar, it is important to take measurements correctly.

Glove pattern

Step-by-step construction of the pattern:

  • We place the hand on paper so that the fingers are closed, and the thumb is located as freely as possible.
  • We outline the contour of the hand.

  • The junction of the index finger with the thumb should be in the middle of your sheet.
  • The junction of the bases of the fingers is marked with dots.
  • We place the ruler between the fingers, then draw straight lines from these points to the ends. All lines must be parallel.

Add 5 cm to the length of the pattern.

  • Carefully circle the resulting drawing.
  • Fold the paper in half so that the edge of the index finger is the edge of the fold. Parts with the thumb we lose.
  • Cut the blank immediately on both sides of the sheet.
  • We get a one-piece glove blank.
  • Making a slot for the thumb.

  • To obtain the exact pattern of the thumb, it is better to wrap it separately with paper, and make all the necessary adjustments.
  • To get a hole, apply a pattern to the brush, then determine its position. The shape can be oval, or, as in a pattern with dimensions, complex.
  • In the case of a complex shape, do not forget to add the necessary area to the thumb drawing.

  • We make the sides (gussets) of the fingers, for this we outline their contours on paper. First one hand, then the other.

  • We connect the gusset of the index with the middle, middle with the nameless and so on.

We try on the resulting pattern.

Cut

It is important to avoid natural holes in the skin, as well as edges, scuffs, as the quality and density of these areas is worse.

  • We lay out the details on the skin, chalk it.
  • Cut out.
  • Do not forget that the gloves are paired, which means that all details must be in a double copy and mirror image.

Important! Decide how you will flash the product - on the front side or the wrong side, it depends on how you will fold the parts.

Sewing

It is assumed that sewing comes from the wrong side by car.

Stages of work:

  • We sew the gussets of the fingers.
  • We start the side seam.
  • Bend the blank for the thumb in half, stitch it.
  • The bottom is open.
  • We turn out.
  • We cut the corner.
  • We correlate the seams of the index and thumb.
  • Pull the thumb blank in 1-2 places with a pin, or attach with a short-lived glue stick.
  • Try on a glove.
  • Stitch the thumb detail.
  • We process the lower cut of the glove.
  • Try on.
  • We make the second glove in the same way.
