How to make a mannequin with your own hands at home

Each person is individual and the parameters of the figure do not always correspond to the standards of beauty. A woman always wants to look beautiful, stylish regardless of age and with any figure. For a person creating clothes, having a room mannequin is important, as this is one of the most important tools in the work.

Clothing that fits perfectly decorates a person, emphasizes the dignity of the figure and gives confidence. But numerous fittings are tiring and therefore it is convenient to have your own individual layout. There is no need to constantly distract a person by trying on, fitting clothes. This will be our master class on how to make a mannequin with your own hands at home. Some nuances should be taken into account: - work on the project begins in the morning.

Important. The baby mannequin is made in the same way as the adult mannequin. Only as a model is a child.

The first way - using tape

To create the desired silhouette you will need:

  • assistant;
  • cling film (dress or t-shirt made of knitwear);
  • comfortable underwear (a bra that will be worn under sewn clothes);
  • adhesive tape, any adhesive tape;
  • synthetic winterizer roll (old blanket, unnecessary things);
  • 2-3 cylinders of construction foam;
  • rubber gloves;
  • newspaper.

As well as:

  • several pairs of scissors (some may stick due to constant work with adhesive tape);
  • rags (for wiping scissors);
  • medium length stick (for possible scratching);
  • a stool (you can kneel when your legs are tired, but you need to be careful to avoid damaging the base);
  • water in large quantities, preferably with a straw (straw, for ease of use).

Progress:

First step

To begin with, you should wrap well the person whose parameters are needed with cling film (put on a tight T-shirt). We start winding it in the direction from the bottom up. Keep in mind that you need to make several layers, given the fit should not be strong. The film has a constriction function.

The cling film can sufficiently reduce your proportions, and you simply will not fit into stitched clothes. The edges of the film can be fixed with tape.

Second phase

Then paste over with adhesive tape. The strips of adhesive tape should be small about 10-15 cm, long pieces uncomfortable to glue, they cling, stick out. They start from the chest around the circumference, stick the tape from the bottom up with overlaps. This will ensure the breasts are in good shape. Adhesive tape is applied in 2-3 layers in different directions. It is important not to forget to mark the waist and bottom line.

  • a layer of adhesive tape should lie down freely, from the waist first down, then up;
  • the chest area is affected last, in order to avoid prolonged shortness of breath;
  • it is necessary to collect hair so that it does not touch the cocoon.

When the body is pasted to the required length, go to the next steps.

Third stage

After full gluing with adhesive tape, you should align the bottom line, measuring from the floor. Further, the middle of the back is marked, with the marked transverse segments. According to these marks, the cocoon is cut and trimmed bottom.

The model needs to be released from this spacesuit, carefully cut along the back with scissors. After, glue the incision with tape.

Fourth stage

Circles are cut out for the hands and the neck from thick cardboard (bobbins from scotch tape). Install cardboard and wrap with tape.

Fifth stage

For convenience, so that the mannequin can be hung, a hanger is inserted into the neck, and cardboard on top.

Sixth stage

The necessary mannequin is almost ready, it remains only to fill the inner space. It is possible with a synthetic winterizer, but this will make the mannequin short-lived, as it will bend under the weight of heavy tissue. Therefore, so that the figure lasts a long time, we fill it with building materials: alabaster or foam. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

But before you fill the gut, you need to prepare the bottom than to close the bottom of the dummy. For this, the mannequin is installed on the newspaper and the desired shape is cut out. According to this sample, the bottom is cut out on cardboard.

Fill with foam 1 / 5th or 1 / 6th part of the dummy, then the newspaper, let the foam harden, again the foam and the newspaper. Do this until space is full. Foam is an expensive building material, so add a newspaper.

Seventh stage

The final step for an aesthetic look would be to sew a cover from a pulling knit, but first you should cover the mannequin with a thin synthetic winterizer so that it is easy to stick needles and pins into it.

So we got a finished version of an individual dummy. The manufacturing method is quite simple and the power of each craftswoman.

The disadvantage of this method can be called the cost of construction foam and the smell that is released during operation. Therefore, foam is best used outdoors, in a well-ventilated area.

Tips for beginners in making tape mannequins

Before wrapping, you should wear underwear in which clothes sewn on a mannequin will be worn. A non-fitted mannequin can be a size smaller than the model.

To create a mannequin, you need to understand what indicators you need to consider, that is, what we will wrap with a film. This is the waist, shoulder width, back width, arm girth, chest volume, hips. Measure these indicators so that you can compare them with the resulting mannequin.

It will be more convenient to work with a mannequin if a soft batting base is made under the fabric. It is made similar to outdoor clothing. The seam allowance and tuck are cut off.

Scotch tape should not be tightened. In the process of wrapping, a person should periodically bend slightly and raise his hands. Otherwise, it will be difficult for the model to breathe and until the end the manufacture of the dummy sheath from tape may not withstand.

Ideally, the height of the dummy should correspond to the height of the person for whom it is made. In this case, the height of the heels must be taken into account.

For greater strength, the top layer is made of reinforced construction tape. It will provide rigidity to the mold.

And in conclusion, take a measuring tape and take measurements. If they coincide with those that were made initially, then you can be congratulated, you have completed everything perfectly.

The second way - using plaster

A pretty good option is to make gypsum. The method is more time consuming and lengthy, but if performed correctly, the result will please you. There are, of course, a number of features that must be considered:

  • gypsum fully sets for a relatively long time. Therefore, the model will have to stand absolutely motionless for about an hour. Since any movement can lead to deformation of the form;
  • the product itself is quite fragile, so you need to treat it as carefully as possible;
  • and it is also necessary to take into account the fragility factor during transportation;
  • the manufacturing procedure is carried out on the naked body, so it must be lubricated with cream or petroleum jelly so that skin irritation does not occur;
  • it should be noted that if a mannequin is made for personal use, that is, for your own body parameters, then it is impossible to cope with this task yourself. In this case, you will need an assistant again. The application of gypsum material on the body requires accuracy, it is very important that this is a person whom you will not be shy, because in the manufacturing process you will have to be exposed.

What you need to make:

  • assistant;
  • comfortable underwear (a bra that will be worn under sewn clothes);
  • adhesive tape, any adhesive tape;
  • synthetic winterizer roll (old blanket, unnecessary things);
  • 2 kg of alabaster (3-4 cylinders of construction foam, plaster casts);
  • rubber gloves;
  • 5 rolls of medical bandage;
  • A container in which bandage dressings will be wetted;
  • Directly plaster bandage;
  • Matter or oilcloth, which will be laid under the legs;
  • Scissors or a knife, so that after hardening cut gypsum;
  • The surface for drying the product.

As well as:

  • several pairs of scissors (some may stick due to constant work with adhesive tape);
  • rags (for wiping scissors);
  • medium length stick (for possible scratching);
  • a stool (you can kneel when your legs are tired, but you need to be careful to avoid damaging the base);
  • water in large quantities (you will want to drink constantly), preferably with a straw (tube, for ease of use);
  • validol (possible loss of consciousness) validol greatly helps.

Manufacturing process:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to provide for a minimum set of clothes, it can be shorts and a T-shirt, or a bra instead of a T-shirt in the case of making a female mannequin. In some cases, you can wrap the body with plastic wrap, but it should be noted that such a solution will slightly affect your figure, i.e. the shape will not fully reflect it in the future.
  2. Further, the strips of gypsum bandage are cut up to a length of 5-10 centimeters, soaked and superimposed on the body. It is advisable to start with the chest and shoulders. Next, move smoothly down. It is necessary to carefully monitor the formation of the armhole, to check the absence of air bubbles in it. The whole process should be carried out as quickly as possible, since the dressings will begin to dry immediately after contact with the skin. Thus, 3-4 layers are applied. Remember, the entire coating should be perfectly even, so before the hardening time it is necessary to refrain from the temptation to turn, bend down, or even stir at least somehow. If you still have a desire to consider something, you can ask your assistant to bring a mirror. Particular attention should be paid to the bottom of the dummy. Here, at the initial stage, one should clearly define: a form with legs is executed, or only the contour of the hips is needed.
  3. After a full coating of the body with gypsum, it is necessary to stand motionless for at least 30–40 minutes from the moment of applying the last strip.
  4. After the gypsum dries, the form is carefully cut along the shoulders and lines of the armhole. It is necessary to work as carefully and as carefully as possible so as not to injure the model. The wrapping process is carried out from top to bottom, there must be struts inside the cocoon so that the cocoon does not lose shape. The figure dries up for about two days in normal room conditions. First, you should leave a place for the rack, for example, fix a stick in the figure so that there is an opening for installing the model.
  5. The next step is to sew the two parts together with the help of threads or you can also use plaster bandages, but it’s easier to work with reinforced tape. There must be spacers inside the cocoon so that the cocoon does not lose shape.
  6. When the form is completely dry, make a control measurement to match the contours of the model body.
  7. To give stability and rigidity, it is necessary to fill the form. This can be done with any improvised material (foam rubber, pieces of fabric, paper, polyurethane foam).

The mannequin is almost ready

Important. Performing the work for the first time, the model may turn out to be a little smaller than its size, then you can fix this error using papier-mâché. It should be noted that the drying time of a thin layer of paper is two days, and a thicker one is approximately four.

The mannequin is completed by installing cardboard and a rod with a stand. Cardboard is placed perpendicular to the axis - the line of the spine. The edges are fixed with tape. Through the prepared hole, a pipe or stand is inserted, the main thing is that it is on wheels and can be rolled on the floor.

Mannequin sheathed with non-slip fabric. It could be:

  • velvet;
  • cashmere;
  • thin drape;
  • old woolen plaid.

Everything is preliminarily cut out according to the usual pattern of the required size, with allowances. It looks prettier if you make longitudinal tucks from the armhole. Armholes are not cut. The neckline is made high and covered with a piece of cloth. Then the sour cream cover is put on the mannequin with seams outward and fitting is done. Now you can scribble seams, and dress up your mannequin.

The pillow for needles on your neck looks beautiful and it works comfortably. The tape indicates the waist.

In addition to the fact that the mannequin serves as a ready-made model for sewing clothes, it can also be used as a decor item for the interior. And also to steam things when it is impossible to do it on an ironing board.

You can make a mannequin at home, just spend your time and a little cash. A self-made mannequin will delight the eye and serve for a long time.

Important. Such a mannequin is suitable as a tailor for sewing clothes and as an individual in his figure.

It is up to you to decide which method is more suitable for you, faster from scotch tape or a plaster mannequin-mummy. We hope you enjoyed the master class and it helped solve the most important problem for the craftswomen. New victories and achievements!
