How to dissolve a felted wool

Very often, housewives are faced with an unpleasant situation: after inaccurate washing or long wear, the knitted woolen item “fails”. Its original elegant appearance is lost, and the wool in some places sometimes falls down to the state of felt. You can, of course, throw such a thing or cut into rags. Some especially economic women manage to cut out from such things that have lost their presentable appearance, fragments preserved in their original form. And on their basis they create new things, impose, sew, etc.

But often it’s just a pity to throw away expensive yarn from which such elegant sweaters and dresses were once knitted. And I don’t feel like letting them in rags either. In this regard, many housewives ask: “Is it possible to dissolve an old knit product with the least damage to yarn. And if possible, how is it better to do this? ”

According to many experienced craftswomen, you can dissolve almost any thing . But this procedure in some situations can take too much time and effort.

Before you get down to business, you should carefully consider the product planned for dissolution, and think about whether the game is worth the candle? Or is it easier to purchase a new wool yarn from which to knit a similar thing?

How to dissolve a felted wool product

The process of dissolving the old knitwear begins with the preparatory work.

Product Preparation

Initially, all additional details should be torn off : patch pockets, belts, straps,

buttons, etc. Then you should thoroughly wash the product in warm water and dry it, but not completely.

IMPORTANT! The product must remain slightly damp! So the threads open much easier, without interlocking and not getting confused with each other.

Completing of the work

The next step is to determine in which direction the thing is knitted : from bottom to top or vice versa.

TIP ! If you started to knit from the bottom, then first the collar is stripped off, then the sleeves, and at the end the seams on the shoulders and sides of the product are already cut.

On each knitted part, the end of the woolen thread should be found, and the dissolution of clothing should begin with it .

Least of all the hassle of dissolving home knit clothes. There will be more problems with the factory product: it can be knitted in whole or in parts, and then stitched. It is possible that a knitted fabric was first woven at the factory, and only then details of clothing were cut from it and sewn. In this case, all the threads will be cut, and a long skein of yarn from them can be obtained only by tying their ends.

Attention! When dissolving, the threads need to be wound into loose balls. Worn threads should be immediately separated from more or less intact, so that they can be used for subsequent knitting for different sections.

Secrets and Tricks

  • Tie individual threads together in flat knots. At the same time leave these threads

ends with a length of at least a couple of centimeters, so that subsequently it is possible to tuck them in with a hook.
  • New threads are added to worn threads for strength, even a variety of colors can be used. The result is a yarn-melange, stronger and more elegant.
  • For things from very tangled and very fluffy wool threads, the following tool is used to facilitate their dissolution . Warm water is poured into the basin mixed with hair balm or shampoo. Put the knitted product there for 15-20 minutes. Then, without removing it from the water, gently dissolve it on a thread.
  • When a thing has fallen too much and a similar method still has no effect, you can try to stretch the woolen thing in a machine with boiling water and cut out all the fragments that are not subject to dissolution.

Straightening wool yarn after dissolving

At the end of the dissolution, the following problem arises for housewives: how to straighten a used

yarn. Indeed, knitting from wavy threads will be difficult . The loops will turn out uneven, “loose”, and the whole connected thing will look very unpresentable.

Here you can take advantage of the old tools developed by the Soviet mistresses.

  • To give the old wool thread an improved look, it is washed with shampoo or even in warm milk . After that, rinse and put to dry on a terry towel placed on the battery.
  • If the wash did not help straighten the fabrics, you can twist them into tight strands and hang them on a rope . From the bottom to the strands to tie any weights that contribute to their straightening.
  • Another “grandmother's” way is to wind old yarn onto a magazine rolled into a tube . After that, remove the skein and put in a colander. It is placed over a boiling pot so that boiling water does not reach the skein of thread. After about half an hour, the yarn is taken out and unwound.
  • For a small amount of wool , you can use a pencil instead of a magazine . In this case, the yarn wound on a pencil is not removed, and with it inserted into the spout of a boiling kettle . Hot steam also passes through the strands, straightening them. As a result, the woolen thread again becomes smooth and fluffy.
