Do-it-yourself rugs from old T-shirts

T-shirt - comfortable and practical clothes. Inexpensive items made from natural fabrics have one drawback: in each wardrobe they once become too many. Do not put aside those products that have not been used for a long time. If you approach creative old T-shirts, you can easily make homespun rugs.

Preliminary stage

To make the conversion successful, you need to take care of everything you need in advance and choose the appropriate way to work.

Preparation of tools and materials

In the process of activity, the following tools and materials will be needed:

  • old t-shirts;
  • sharp scissors;
  • a needle and thread matching in density and color;
  • Hook No. 15 - 20 (if it is decided to tie the mat).

The specific list of basic materials depends on the chosen method of work.

Reference! In the manufacture of a rug based on or on a frame, in addition to the basic materials, you will need cardboard, glue, a frame and small nails or a gymnastic hoop.

T-shirt selection and preparation for remaking

From the (clean!) T-shirts that have accumulated in the closet, they choose suitable t-shirts.

Item Selection Options

The density of the fabric. It is best to use products of the same density: thin T-shirts or sweatshirts made of thicker knitwear.

Color. You need to imagine in advance how the color of different t-shirts will be combined in a new product.

When selecting things, you can use clothes that have different shades of the same color, for example, dark blue - blue - blue - pale blue.

Rugs made from contrasting color things look good, as well as colorful, colorful things. In this case, you can select several (no more than 3) primary colors and complement them with color shades.

Important! T-shirts that have lost their color (faded from the sun or faded from repeated washes) can be pre-painted by selecting the colors of the desired colors.

Cutting weaving strips

The homespun rug is made of a special “yarn” - knitted stripes. They are cut from cooked to remake old clothes.

Strip Cutting Options

Without cutting the t-shirt:

  • Round;
  • In a spiral;

Cutting the product along one side seam:

  • On separate stripes.

Reference! The width of the strips depends on the density of the fabric. Narrower stripes (from 1.5 to 2.5 cm) are cut from thin knitwear. From dense knitted fabric, you can make wider stripes (up to 4 - 5 cm).

In order for the strips to be uniform in width, the cut lines must first be drawn on the fabric.

After cutting the strip you need to stretch a little, and then connect. To do this, they can be sewn or knitted with each other. You can use another connection method: using cuts. They are made by stepping back about 1.5 cm from the edge of the strip. For fastening, one strip is laid on the other so that both cuts coincide. Through this double cut, the free edge of the strip, which is at the bottom, is pulled. So 2 tapes are connected, and then proceed to the connection of the next tape.

For convenience, the connected stripes are wound into balls.

Choosing a way to do the job

Getting down to needlework, you need to choose the way in which the work will be done. There are several options for making rugs from t-shirts:

  • Knitting;
  • Weaving (tape, from braids);
  • With or without a warp (mesh, fabric).

Work execution technology

Knitted rug

Advice! This method of alteration is suitable primarily for those who know how to crochet.

  • Make balls with knitted yarn.
  • Crochet pattern. Pull in air loops (5), loop them with a connecting post. In the next row, the ring is tied with crochets (8). On each loop of this row, 2 SC are knitted. In the next round, 2 single crochet stitches are made again from one loop, and the next single crochet stitch. This alternation is repeated over the entire circumference. Starting from the next row between each double columns, the number of ordinary ones is increased: in one row - 2, in the next - 3, etc.
  • The required diameter is tied out and, finally, a knitted strip is fixed.

Important! In the absence of a hook, knitting can be done manually by pulling a strip through a knitted loop. Knitting without a hook is distinguished by elongated deadlines, it will not affect the quality of the product.

Wickerwork

From ordinary stripes

For a rug woven from strips, you need a frame. You can use a regular baguette for a picture. Suitable frames are obtained from wooden slats or pipes made of polypropylene, which connect the corners.

Operating procedure:

  • Horizontal strips are pulled on the frame, leaving the same distance between them. The ends of the strips are tied to the frame.
  • Each vertical tape is alternately passed under the horizontal, then pulled over it and re-inserted under the strip. Thus, they weave a rug, filling the entire area inside the frame.

Advice! As a frame, you can use the gymnastic hoop. In this case, it will be possible to make a round rug. First, tapes are fixed on the hoop in diameter, connecting them in the center. Then, in a circle, the product is filled with transverse strips, passing them above and below the longitudinal ribbons.

From braids

Another version of the product is made of knitted braids.

Operating procedure:

  • From three strips weave knitted braids.
  • The resulting pigtails are sewn by hand or by machine seam.

Advice! Pigtails can also be used to make a knitted rug.

Rug Based

On a mesh basis

A homespun rug can be made without a frame. In this case, you need a mesh base. Suitable for needlework building mesh (for painting or plastering).

Procedure:

  • From the grid, the base of the necessary shape is cut out (square, rectangle, circle, rhombus, oval, heart).
  • Strips are cut into small pieces (10 to 12 cm).
  • Each part of the ribbon is passed into the cell and tied. The remaining parts of the fabric over the knot will become the “pile” of the carpet.
  • lAfter filling all the mesh cells, they get the original mat.

Fabric based

Procedure:

  • The base is cut out of the fabric, giving it the shape chosen for the product.
  • The t-shirt is cut into wide parts (strip width - 15 cm).
  • Each tape is folded in half (new width - 7.5 cm). The edges of the ribbons are connected with an estimated seam. It is performed by stepping back from the edge of about 1.5 cm.
  • Double fringes make fringe. To do this, the rolled edge is incised, the length of the cuts is 4 - 4.5 cm. From the seam to the edge of the cut should remain about 1.5 cm.
  • Fill the base with fringe strips. The work is performed in the direction from the edge - to the center. The strips are laid on top of each other so that only the top of the fringe remains open. At the base, the strips are first primed, and then attached with a machine line.

How to care for rugs made from old T-shirts

A homespun rug will help to make any room in an apartment or a country house cozy. It’s easy to take care of a homemade product.

Rules for the care of homemade rugs:

  • Products should be washed regularly in warm water, without the use of aggressive detergents. Washing can be done either manually or in the machine. A suitable machine wash is delicate.
  • Drying the mats is best done by carefully placing them on a flat, horizontal surface.
