DIY patchwork bags

Patchwork is one of the oldest decor techniques. It is simple and complex at the same time. Putting together a canvas of many pieces, you can achieve the geometric accuracy of neighboring elements. And you can randomly scribble unprocessed scraps and get an artwork, thanks to a filigree selection of color combinations of the picture elements.

In those days when production was not so developed, and the fabrics were expensive, any scrap of fabric was stored. The patchwork technique was widespread in many countries. Items collected from a large number of fragments adorned the house and warmed on winter evenings.

Nowadays, famous fashion houses use fabrics composed of shreds of different colors and textures in their smart collections. Products look expensive and original. There is nothing complicated in decorating your clothes or home with products using this decor technique.

Any needlewoman has a rather big bag at home with beautiful trimmings and leftover fabrics, the bigger it is, the better. A picture made up of different, but suitable for the general color, patches is the most valuable in the patchwork technique . You can use your first experiments in new technology for sewing a fashionable shopper bag.

The necessary material to make a bag patchwork

For the first experiment, it is better to choose a multi-colored thin cotton linen fabric. When compiling a composition, you will need about five types of drawing. All fabrics should be in the same color scheme: warm or cold.

Important! Before you open all the materials you need to wash or steam it well, because the cotton fabrics are shrinkable, and we are going to carry the bag for a long time.

In addition to fabrics for decor, you need to prepare:

  • cotton or mixed fabric for lining, bottom and handles of the bag, it will also cover the wrong side of the decor;
  • sharp scissors for cutting parts. Advanced needlewomen use a circular knife with a special lined substrate;
  • ruler and pencil, thin marker, tailor's chalk, tailor's pins;
  • well-tuned sewing machine with straight and decorative stitches.

Reference! A patchwork patch bag might be a collection of denim patches. Old jeans and denim shirts will be used. The main thing is that the density of the stitched parts is approximately the same.

Patterns with photos for a bag patchwork

For the first experiment, it is better to use the simplest form for stitched fragments - a square. With the width of the side of the workpiece 7 cm, the width of the machined parts without allowance for the seam will be 5 cm.

If you have time and confidence in your abilities, you can choose a decor model more difficult. Workpieces with a slice different from the right angle are more difficult to sew.

Bags can also vary in cut and design.

How to make a bag using the DIY patchwork technique

First you need to build a product pattern. On the cloth of the bag we mark the part allotted for decor. The length and width of the decor should be a multiple of the stitched squares. That is, if the size of the square is 5X5 cm, then the decor can be 20X30 cm or 30X50 cm.

The most creative part of the work is drawing up a picture from different shreds. Traditionally, the brightest part of the decor is located in the center, in the form of an equilateral rhombus. Fragments of a paler color complement the picture on the sides. The pattern, which is achieved by a combination of different shreds, can be very different, the craftsman’s imagination makes such products original and unique.

When the composition is composed, the fragments are numbered in rows. The squares are stitched together in rows, after the stitched rows are joined together.

When sewing bags, an overlock is not required. The stitch on the machine should be well adjusted, the stitch frequency is 3-4 mm. Since the product is designed to carry heavy loads, the seams must be durable. The threads are used synthetic or blended, they will withstand a large load, and will not fade in the sun.

Important! When stitching decorative elements, the seam width is always the same. The appearance of the decor depends on this. The slightest mismatch of the joints can not be corrected with the subsequent stitching of the finished rows.

The sewn decor sheet is ironed with steam. Now you can connect other parts of the bag. The bottom, bag handles and lining are processed and connected to decor elements. All seam allowances are eventually covered with a lining.

The finished bag is ironed, the necessary accessories are sewn.

Having mastered the simple form of decor, you can make the model more complicated. Stitched fragments can be used as a fabric cloth from which details of a bag are cut out. You can combine different techniques in one product, for example, having quilted a part from a patchwork lined with decorative stitching. Gradually gaining new experience in the manufacture of decor from fabric, products will be more complicated, and the result will be more interesting.
