DIY patchwork bag

No fashionable ups and downs are not afraid of patchwork. Technology with a thousand-year history will always have admirers.

The main advantage of this method of tailoring is its versatility.

Patchwork elements organically look both on a blouse and on a bag. Therefore, it is easy to do it yourself.

Types of patchwork

Regardless of the style of patchwork, there are two ways to cut:

  1. First, a single canvas is assembled from shreds, then it is cut out according to the patterns of the pattern. This is convenient, but there are many scraps left.
  2. First, a pattern is made, and then, based on its shape, pieces of fabric are sewn into a pattern. More time consuming process, but you can create real masterpieces.

Patchwork Techniques

Materials:

  • dense natural and mixed fabrics: linen, cotton, viscose;
  • matting;
  • suede;
  • tweed, tapestry, drape;
  • varnished fabrics.

Advice! Handles of bags can be sewn to the main part, or done on loops and a ring.

Japanese patchwork summer bag

The Japanese patchwork technique is a cross between patchwork, mosaics and appliqués.

We will make a bag of simple cut.

Would need:

  • The main fabric is 0.5-0.7 m, with a width of 1.5 m.
  • Flaps of fabric for applique.
  • Soft fabric / synthetic winterizer for laying bags.
  • Glue non-woven.
  • Belt rings - 2 pcs.
  • Zipper.
  • Threads in tone, as well as contrasting color.

Pattern:

  • The main part of the bag is 4 parts with a fold.
  • Bottom part - 2 parts with a fold.
  • Belt - 1 piece with a fold.
  • Loops - 2 parts with a fold. Length 10 cm, width 6 cm with a fold.

Advice! The Japanese style involves the use of predominantly natural fabrics of natural or similar colors.

A feature of the Japanese patchwork is a dense stitch, often with threads of contrasting color . Stitching lines give both decorativeness and strength.

Thin similar products also do not exist; filler is used.

Before assembly, the product resembles a layer cake:

  • Determined with the materials.
  • Select a picture for the product. For the first time, you can create the simplest picture yourself, for example, a house in the style of "primitive" or a flower - seven-color.
  • We transfer the patterns to thick cardboard.
  • From the main material we cut out the details of the bag in a double copy. This is necessary in order to be able to use a dense, three-dimensional gasket.
  • Add the blank from the cushioning fabric.
  • We connect this design with pins, needles or stitching stitches along the contour.
  • Apply a special disappearing pencil or soap to the stitch pattern.
  • Quilting the details clean.
  • We draw the contours of the picture on the fabric.
  • Cut the pattern into separate pieces.
  • We cut out the details of the figure, do not forget about the allowance for the seam of 0.3-0.3 cm.
  • On the contour on the resulting fabric blanks we make small notches.
  • We wrap the cardboard elements of the fabric, bend the edges, iron.

Instead of paper, you can use an adhesive pad:

  • Mosaic elements are applied to the main part and sew, or glued to the right places. We make a seam secret, capturing just a few strings.
  • We perform additional stitching along the contour of the front side.
  • Decorate with buttons, brooches, embroidery, beads.
  • We sew the details of the bag.
  • We sew in the lock.
  • Edges are processed with finished or just cut oblique collars.
  • We make a long belt. One part with a bend, equal in width to the double width of the finished belt, plus seam allowances. We recommend putting a gasket inside for strength.
  • Sew loops on the sides of the bag.
  • We insert the rings into the loops and belt.
  • Sew the ends of the belt with rings.

Flat patch bag

This handbag is made according to the principle of initial stitching of fabric strips into one fabric with the following cutting:

  • All sections are processed oblique inlay.
  • Button closure.
  • The sequence of cutting and sewing is shown in the figure.

Let us dwell on the preparation of flaps:

  • Choose color combinations that are not irritating to the eye.
  • Flaps should be the same length.
  • If you use fabric of different densities, then try to create a smooth transition from thin fabrics to thick ones.

  • If some strips are too short, we sew a few along the length.
  • Stitch strips of shreds with each other.
  • We get a canvas of rectangular shape.
  • We cut out the details of the bag.

  • We sew the details.
  • We process oblique inlay slices.
  • We break through a button or a jeans button.

Patchwork Bags with Appliques

In the center of complex compositions, appliqué or embroidered elements are possible.

Some styles do not share applique and patchwork.

It is convenient to make applications either using paper blanks, as in the Japanese patchwork, or using double-sided non-woven fabric.

In Soviet times, a popular method of making applications was the use of plastic bags to fix the elements of the mosaic.

In the modern world, this has not lost its relevance.

Color combinations

From the flaps of fabric, you can make simple handbags - wallets, as well as “sacks”, “tablets”, “trunks” and many other models in a wide variety of styles. This is a fascinating, and also useful activity.
